Advent of Code 2021: Day 7
Day 7 seems forgiving in that it allows a mostly-brute-force solution to finish in ~2s, which I was grateful for at ~12:30 this morning. I’ve come up with a single small optimization since then that took me down to ~215ms (but which I’m not entirely sure will work for all inputs – I don’t understand if/why it’s mathematically sound).

Our input is a list of horizontal non-negative integer positions on the x-axis, from 0 to ~2000. Our tasks is to find the integer position on the x-axis to which it is cheapest for all of our points to “migrate” to.

For part 1, it “costs” a point 1 fuel unit per unit moved.
By working through some tests cases on paper, first with two points, then with three, etc., the median looked like a pretty good option for the points to move to, and it turned out to satisfy part-1 for both the test and real inputs. I don’t quite understand why, but I’m guessing a Clojurian has already explained it in the Slack channel.

Part 2 uses a different fuel-cost function – for a point to move 1 unit from home it costs 1 fuel; to move 2 units from home, it costs 1 + 2 fuel; etc.
The best I came up with last night was to calculate the total cost
at every point, from 0 to (apply max positions)
. Calculating cost
for a point can be done in constant time using the formula
c = (d(d-1))/2
, where d
is the distance to move.
Today I found that, for test cases I worked out on paper, and for the tests and real inputs, the solution position is bounded by the median and mean positions. This leaves us in the O(n^2) complexity class, but in the actual case helps quite a bit.

(reduce min))))
(rcf/tests
(time (part-2 positions)) := 95581659) ; => 213.727833 ms
I’m suspicious whether this is mathematically sound – the rounding of the mean seems fishy.
I’m very curious to read others’ solutions – it seems like there should be an O(n) solution, or maybe O(nlogn).
